African Court Coalition Advocacy Mission in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 13-23 May 2013

The African Court Coalition carried a successful advocacy mission in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia prior and during the 21st African Union Summit, from 13 to 23 May. The main objectives of the Mission was to impress on African Union state members the importance of an effective African Court, the importance of making the declaration under Article 34 (6) in terms of access to justice and making the African Court effective, encouraging more states to ratify the Protocol establishing the African Court and also create awareness about the work of the African Court.

The Coalition delegation comprised of Mr. Amadou Kane, Deputy Chair of the Coalition; Mr. Dieu-Donné Wedi Djamba, Executive Secretary of the Coalition; Mr Ibrahim Basem Mahfouz Abdo, Northern Africa Focal point; and Ms Adaobi Egboka, West Africa Focal Point. The delegation was able to meet with different African States Embassies in Addis Ababa including;
• Embassy of Mozambique
• Embassy of Togo
• Embassy of Senegal
• Embassy of Tunisia
• Embassy of Zimbabwe
• Embassy of Zambia
• Embassy of Botswana
• Embassy of Gabon
• Embassy of South Sudan
• Embassy of Benin
• Embassy of Djibouti
• Embassy of the Democratic Republic of Congo
• Embassy of Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic and
• Embassy of Cote d’Ivoire

The delegate also met with various representatives of the African Union such as representatives from;
• The Humanitarian Affairs, Refugees and Displaced person Division (HARDP)
• The Economic, Social and Cultural Council of the African Union (ECOSOCC-AU)
• The Citizens and Diaspora Directorate (CIDO) and
• Women, Gender and Development Directorate

In realization of access to the African Court and the effectiveness of the same Court, the Coalition will continue to carry out its advocacy missions for ratification and declaration of the Protocol Establishing the African Court.
