15th Ordinary Session of the AU Summit, Kampala, July 2010

The 15th Ordinary Session of the African Union Summit was held in Kampala, Uganda from 19 to 27 July 2010.

The Coalition made a submisssion to the 15th Ordinary Session of the African Union Summit, in which it calls on the AU  Executive Council, as it elects the candidates for election of judges to the Court to consider the 2004 AU guidelines in ensuring an independent and credible Court. Vital to an effective and efficient Court is an independent body with adequate funds to undertake its mandate. The AU’s role is critical in this regard.

14th Ordinary Session of the AU Summit, Addis Ababa, January 2010

The 14th Ordinary Session of the African Union Summit was held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from 25 January to 2 February 2010, under the theme: “Information and Communication Technologies in Africa: Challenges and Prospects for Development”.

The new Chairperson of the African Union is Dr. Bingu Wa Mutharika, President of the Republic of Malawi.

One of the highlights during the Assembly of the AU Heads of State and Government was the launch of the new African Union flag.

The Ministers also brainstormed  the Report of the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights (AfCHPR).

They will further consider and adopt the Report of the Chairperson of NEPAD Heads of State and Government Implementation Committee; the Report of the Ministerial Meeting on the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC); the Report of the Chairperson of the Committee of Ten on the UN Reforms; and the Report of the Commission on the Implementation of Previous Decisions of the Executive Council and the Assembly.

Meanwhile, the Progress Report of the Commission on the Implementation of Assembly Decision on the Hissene Habre Case adopted by the Thirteenth Ordinary Session of the Assembly held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in February 2009 was also at the center of discussion during the Summit, including the items proposed by AU Member States.

 

13th Ordinary Session of the AU Summit, Sirte, June 2009

The 13th Ordinary Session of the African Union Summit was held in Sirte, Libya from 24 June to 3 July 2009. The theme for this summit was: “Investing in Agriculture for Economic Growth and Food Security”.

12th Ordinary Session of the AU Summit, Addis Ababa, January 2009

The 12th Ordinary Session of the Summit of the African Union Heads of State and Government took place in Addis Ababa, the seat of the African Union from 26 January to 3 February 2009. The theme for this Summit was: “Infrastructure Development in Africa”, with a particular focus on the transport and energy sectors. The “Global Financial Crisis” was also be amongst the major topics of discussion during the Summit.

 

11th Ordinary Session of the AU Summit, Sharm El-Sheikh, June 2008

The 11th Ordinary Session of the African Union Summit was held in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, from  24 June to 1 July 2008.

The Coalition made a submission to the 11th Ordinary Session of the African Union Summit, in which it calls on the AU Assembly of Heads of State and Government and the Executive Council of Ministers  to adopt the single legal instrument establishing the African Court of Justice and Human Rights with the following conditions:

  1. Support direct access for all entities in Africa, including individuals, and to rescind the requirement of optional declarations; and,
  2. Call on States Parties to the protocol establishing the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights to make the declaration allowing direct access to the Court by individuals and NGOs as required under Article 34(6) of the enabling protocol.

10th Ordinary Session of the AU Summit, Addis Ababa, January 2008

The 10th Ordinary Session of the African Union Summit was held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from 25 January to 2 February 2008.
