LIBERIA\u2019S COMMITMENT TO THE RATIFICATION OF THE AFRICAN COURT PROTOCOL <\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>

The Government of the Republic of Liberia has committed to ratifying the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples\u2019 Rights on the Establishment of an African Court on Human and Peoples\u2019 Rights (the African Court Protocol), and depositing of the Declaration to allow direct access to the Court by NGOs and individuals in Liberia. This commitment was made on Thursday 18 April 2024 by Liberia\u2019s Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung during a sensitization visit by the African Court delegation to his office at the Capital Hill in Monrovia.<\/span><\/p>

The African Court delegation that was led by the President of the Court, Hon. Lady Justice Imani Daud Aboud and Vice President Hon. Justice Modibo Sacko conducted a sensitization visit to Liberia to raise awareness on the work of the Court and to engage Liberian authorities and various stakeholders in the human rights sector to take a decisive role in the ratification of the African Court Protocol.<\/span><\/p>

During the Court\u2019s sensitization meeting, the African Court also engaged with more than 100 human rights stakeholders in Liberia on Friday 19 April<\/a><\/strong>. The engagement focused on lengthy discussions about the functions of the African Court, the relationship of the Court with other regional Courts and quasi-judicial institutions, application of human rights instruments in Liberia and human rights protection mechanisms in the country.<\/span><\/p>

It is now more than 25 years since Liberia signed the African Protocol in 1998, but it is yet to ratify the Protocol. The African Court Coalition congratulates the current government administration for the commitment made to the ratification of the African Court Protocol and the commitment to allow direct access to the African Court for Liberian citizens. We call upon the Liberian government to act on those commitments as soon as possible to manifest its commitments in the promotion and protection of human rights in Africa.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

L’ENGAGEMENT DU LIBERIA EN FAVEUR DE LA RATIFICATION DU PROTOCOLE DE LA COUR AFRICAINE<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>

Le gouvernement de la R\u00e9publique du Liberia s’est engag\u00e9 \u00e0 ratifier le Protocole \u00e0 la Charte africaine des droits de l’homme et des peuples portant cr\u00e9ation d’une Cour africaine des droits de l’homme et des peuples (le Protocole de la Cour africaine), et \u00e0 d\u00e9poser la D\u00e9claration pour permettre l’acc\u00e8s direct \u00e0 la Cour par les ONG et les individus au Liberia. Cet engagement a \u00e9t\u00e9 pris le jeudi 18 avril 2024 par le vice-pr\u00e9sident du Lib\u00e9ria, Jeremiah Kpan Koung, lors d’une visite de sensibilisation de la d\u00e9l\u00e9gation de la Cour africaine effectu\u00e9e dans son bureau \u00e0 Capital Hill, \u00e0 Monrovia.<\/span><\/p>

La d\u00e9l\u00e9gation de la Cour africaine, dirig\u00e9e par la pr\u00e9sidente de la Cour, Mme la juge Imani Daud Aboud, et le vice-pr\u00e9sident, M. le juge Modibo Sacko, a effectu\u00e9 une visite de sensibilisation au Liberia afin de faire conna\u00eetre le travail de la Cour et d’inciter les autorit\u00e9s lib\u00e9riennes et les diff\u00e9rentes parties prenantes dans le domaine des droits de l’homme \u00e0 jouer un r\u00f4le d\u00e9cisif dans la ratification du protocole de la Cour africaine.<\/span><\/p>

Au cours de la r\u00e9union de sensibilisation de la Cour, la Cour africaine a \u00e9galement rencontr\u00e9 plus de 100 acteurs des droits de l’homme au Lib\u00e9ria le vendredi 19 avril<\/a><\/strong>. Les discussions ont port\u00e9 sur les fonctions de la Cour africaine, les relations de la Cour avec d’autres cours r\u00e9gionales et institutions quasi-judiciaires, l’application des instruments des droits de l’homme au Lib\u00e9ria et les m\u00e9canismes de protection des droits de l’homme dans le pays.<\/span><\/p>

Le Liberia a sign\u00e9 le protocole africain en 1998 il y a plus de 25 ans, mais il ne l’a toujours pas ratifi\u00e9. La Coalition pour la Cour africaine f\u00e9licite l’actuelle administration gouvernementale pour l’engagement effectu\u00e9 en faveur de la ratification du protocole de la Cour africaine et pour l’engagement pris d’autoriser l’acc\u00e8s direct des citoyens lib\u00e9riens \u00e0 la Cour africaine. Nous appelons le gouvernement lib\u00e9rien \u00e0 donner suite \u00e0 ces engagements d\u00e8s que possible afin de manifester son engagement dans la promotion et la protection des droits de l’homme en Afrique.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
