THE AFRICAN COURT ON HUMAN AND PEOPLES’ RIGHTS SET TO ELECT ITS NEW PRESIDENT AND VICE-PRESIDENT ON THE OPENING OF ITS 77TH ORDINARY SESSION ON 2 JUNE 2025

The African Court on Human & Peoples’ Rights is set to elect its new Bureau (President and Vice President) on Monday, 2 June 2025 to succeed Hon. Lady Justice Imani Daud Aboud of Tanzania and Hon. Justice Modibo Sacko of Mali, whose respective terms as President and Vice President are coming to an end. The elections will take place during the 77th Ordinary Session of the Court which starts from 2 to 27 June 2025 at the seat of the Court in Arusha, United Republic of Tanzania.

Lady Justice Imani Daud Aboud, a national of Tanzania, was first elected as President of the Court in May 2021 and was re-elected in July 2023, for a final two-year term in the Bureau. She was first elected as Judge of the African Court in July 2018, and was re-elected for a second and final term of six (6) years in February 2021.

As for the Vice-President, Hon. Justice Sacko Modibo who is a citizen of the Republic of Mali, he was elected Judge of the African Court in February 2021, for a six-year term and was later elected as Vice President of the Court in July 2023 for a two-year term.

Apart from elections of the new Bureau, the Court will also hold several other events as follows;

  • Monday 2 – Tuesday 3 June 2025; the Court will hold a joint retreat with the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) to discuss complementarity between the two institutions;
  • Wednesday 4 June 2025; the Court will hold a Public Hearing in the matter of African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights v Republic of Kenya, (Application No. 006/2012) commonly known as the Ogiek case;
  • Thursday 26 June 2025; the Court will deliver seven (7) decisions adopted during its 76th and 77th Ordinary Sessions.
